A new electric car arrives on Guernsey roads

Paul Domaille has set up the Guernsey Electric Car Car Company Ltd. to import electric cars into Guernsey.  He has brought to the island the Mega City electric car manufactured by Aexam in France, and distributed in the UK by Aexam UK who recently took over the UK distributorship from the NICE (No Internal Combustion Engine) Car Company.  He has two models available.  A two-seater delivered to you in Guernsey sells for £10,166 and the 2 + 2 (the two seats in the rear may be cramped) sells for £10,592.  These prices include delivery, plates and registration.

This handsome car is the perfect vehicle for our island roads because of our top island speed limit and the limited number of miles we usually drive each day. The Mega City has a range of up to 40 miles on a full charge and a top speed of 40 mph.

The lead gel battery charges fully from a discharged state in about eight hours so it can be charged overnight using the economy 12 rate from Guernsey Electricity. A full charge currently costs about £0.35 so the running cost per mile works out at less than one pence.  The battery has a two year warranty but should last four years under normal driving conditions.  If you price in a replacement battery the long term running cost will be higher but electric cars are generally low maintenance vehicles.  The battery pack will discharge about eight percent of its capacity each week if it is not plugged into the mains.

The Mega City can be fully serviced on island.  The ABS body work and the aluminium frame resist corrosion, which is beneficial in Guernsey's salt-laden air. This electric car has the basics expected in a modern car - a CD/Radio with removable security face, central locking, electric windows, alloy wheels etc. but don't expect the sturdiness or interior finish of a Prius (about £3000.00 more) which benefits from a huge research budget, and a large company behind it.

Expect to see more electric cars on island roads.  The people who buy the first fully electric cars will be trendsetters as electric cars are still expensive for what you receive compared to petrol engine cars.  Fully electric car production doesn't yet benefit from economies-of-scale (the Aexam factory in Aix-Le-Bain currently produces two Mega City cars per day) but as large car manufacturers begin production, costs will come down.

The Mega City and other electric vehicles currently available are not going to be family cars but if you don't walk or bicycle to your job or school then using a Mega City electric car to commute to work makes sense.

Electric cars produce no exhaust fumes. Numerous studies show that traffic pollution causes lung disease.  Some Guernsey schools, particularly in St. Peter Port, are adjacent to areas of heavy traffic.  If you must drive your children to school using the zero- emission Mega City or another electric car would be eminently sensible.
