EARTHHOUR GUERNSEY

It started with a question: how could WWF inspire people to take action on climate change?  The answer was to ask the people of Sydney to turn off their lights for one hour – this became Earth Hour.

In March 2007, in Sydney, 2.2 million people and 2,100 businesses did exactly that. Their inspirational collective effort reduced the city's energy consumption by a whopping 10.2% during that hour – equivalent to taking 48,000 cars off the road.

This year, Earth Hour went global and Guernsey joined in. At 8pm local time, on 29 March 2008, millions of supporters in many major cities and communities across the world joined together and switched off their lights to demonstrate their support for action on climate change.

G-CAN asked all participating organisations to agree to switch off non-essential lighting (such as building floodlights) for Earth Hour and encourage staff to get involved themselves at home.  Some organisations offered to go a step further and ensure that non-essential electrical equipment was not left on standby over the week end. A number of restaurants endorsed this project by lighting their dining rooms by candle light during Earth Hour.
