Guernsey's participation in the International Day of Climate Action
350.org is co-ordinating the global International Day of Climate Action on 24 October 2009.
Guernsey residents who wish to participate are asked to arrive at the north end of Vazon beach at 3 pm where a photograph of the assembled crowd will be taken by Tallpictures. The photograph will be used to raise awareness of the public support for political action to tackle climate change at the Copenhagen climate summit in December.
The picture of Guernsey residents will be broadcast on a large outdoor screen in Times Square, New York and sent to the international gathering of world leaders in Copenhagen in December.
We will ask that people arrange themselves to form the number '350' on the beach. After the photograph people can take part in a community beach walk or search the shore for wildlife.
What is the relevance of the number 350?
The 350.org website states that 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is what many scientists, climate experts and progressive national governments are now saying is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in our atmosphere which is why the 24 October has been designated an International Day of Climate Action to bring attention to this fact.
